Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
This show is so similar to Attack on Titan, it’s almost unsettling.
Set in the industrial revolution, human-eating monsters known as Kabaneri have terrorized the world, and only thick-walled societies joined by train lines have managed to survive.
The story follows Ikoma, who witnesses his home be torn apart and burned to the ground after Kabaneri break through. He’s forced to flee with a weapon he’s created and sets off on a mission to eradicate Kabaneri from the world.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is also made by the same studio that did the first few seasons of Attack on Titan, and the shows also share directors, making Kabaneri feel eerily similar.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
If you love Eren’s determination, particularly in the last season as right and wrong become blurred, you’ll love the lead character in Code Geass.
This show takes place in a Japan that has been conquered by the Holy Empire of Britannia. Lelouch is a genius Brittanian student who, through a twist of fate, becomes imbued with an immense power, which he secretly uses to support the rebels against Brittanian rule.
While leading a national rebellion, he continues to attend his prestigious school alongside his friend, Japanese kid Suzaku, who just so happens to be climbing through the ranks of Brittania’s army.
A story full of politics, secrets, action and dubious morals – the show is a brighter version of Attack on Titan’s final few seasons.
The Promised Neverland
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
In a world similar to Attack on Titan but filled with alchemy, two brothers’ peaceful lives are thrown into chaos after a disaster at the start of the show. To remedy the mistake, they must seek out the legendary Philosopher’s Stone.
While following their own path, they join the State Military, where they can use and hone their powers. However, the closer they get, the more the plot thickens, until they learn of a conspiracy that threatens their entire world.
Fullmetal Alchemist, like Attack on Titan, does a great job of blending personal missions with a wider political landscape, where it’s never quite clear which characters can be trusted.

Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign
This series also starts with young children living in a trapped society, eager to escape and discover the outside world.
In Owari no Seraph, humanity now lives under the protection and captivity of vampires. When Yuuichirou tries to escape with his adopted family, they are all killed except him, who escapes, and his brother his, Mikaela, who is held captive.
Yuuichirou manages to flee the encampment and is saved by members of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, who aim to exterminate the vampires. Mikaela, meanwhile, is turned into a vampire, given powers and joins their forces to fight against the Imperial Demon Army.
Seraph of the End is full of action and war, while the two brothers on opposite sides add a psychological twist.
Claymore is another series that starts with people living in fear of powerful creatures that look like humans – in this case, shapeshifters called Yoma. When Raki’s family is killed by Yoma, he is saved by Clare, a Claymore, manufactured warriors designed specifically to kill the monsters.
The two of them go on a journey through the world, with Raki slowly learning about Clare’s origins and her mission of vengeance against the Yoma that changed her life, just like Raki’s.
In this sci-fi anime, the colonization of Mars has gone awry. Cockroaches were sent to terraform the planet, but they have instead adapted and become humanoid creatures with exceptional intelligent and strength.
When a new disease starts wiping through the Earth, scientists suspect the cure is on Mars, forcing a trained team of genetically-improved soldiers to return to the planet. However, as soon as they arrive, they are ambushed by the roaches.
A story full of survival and fighting against a mysterious, overpowering enemy – there are many similarities between this and Attack on Titan to enjoy.
The story in Berserk is quite different from Attack on Titan, but both stories enjoy a similarly dark and grtty atmosphere.
Set in a medieval fantasy world, the story follows Guts, a mercenary famous for the giant sword that he wields. Guts, either with the Band of the Hawk or by himself, depending on which series you watch, is constantly involved in dark, gruesome battles, while a dark story unfolds in the shadows and threatens him at every turn.
God Eater is set in a world ravaged by incredibly powerful beings known as Aragami, which have forced the remains of humanity to live in heavily protected settlements.
The only ones that can stand up to the Aragami are God Eaters, soldiers imbued with Oracle cells that allow them to wield special weapons known as God Arcs.
The story follows Lenka, a young boy who becomes a God Eater with the mission of eradicating the Aragami. God Eater is a lighter version of Attack on Titan, with more fantasy elements.
The Castlevania Netflix series is one of the best American animated series in recent years and strikes a similarly dark tone as Attack on Titan.
The story follows monster hunter Trevor Belmont in a medieval world where Dracula’s demons are terrorising humanity. Along with magician Sypha Belnades and Dracula’s son Alucard, they travel the kingdom to try and free humanity from the grasp of Dracula and his powerful army his.
This is another series that starts with humanity living within walls. In Black Bullet, the walls protect people from Gastrea, a virus that turns people into monsters.
Gastrea also creates Cursed Children, girls that have superhuman powers due to trace amounts of the virus in their bodies. Working with Promoters, trained operatives charged with protecting the Cursed Children, they are the last hope of stopping Gastrea from wiping out humanity.
One of the biggest anime of recent years, Kimetsu no Yaiba follows another young boy who sets out on a course to take revenge on those that killed his family.
In this series, Titans are replaced with demons. When Demons kill Tanjirou ‘s family and turn his sister her, Nezuko, into a demon, he is determined to find a way to return her to normal. Joining the Demon Slayer Corps, he is sent on missions throughout the world, coming across all manner of enemies while learning about the nature of the demons and how to save his sister his.

Eighty-Six is another story heavily reliant on military and political themes. Here, the story follows a long-running war between the Republic of San Magnolia and their war against the Empire of Giad.
According to reports in San Magnolia, the war against the autonomous units of Giad has resulted in no casualties. However, that’s because the army uses a suppressed group known only as the 86 to fight on their behalf under the watchful eye of a handler.
The story follows Lena, a noble and 86 sympathiser who becomes a new handler, and Shinei, an infamous squadron leader in the 86. Lena forms a bond with the subjugated minority, and as the war develops, they both discover that not everything is as it seems.
Another big anime series from recent years, Jujutsu Kaisen is full of incredible action scenes and dark fights against supernatural beings.
The story follows Yuuji Itadori, a normal high-schooler who is part of the Occult Research Club after school. After unwittingly releasing the power of a cursed finger and attracting demons to the school, he swallows it, acquiring the power of famed demon Ryomen Sukuna and saving his friends his.
However, it comes at a cost – Yuuji must now join the ranks of Jujutsu Sorcerers, who work to keep demons at bay. As he can control the famously evil demon residing inside him, he is tasked with hunting down and finding Sukuna ‘s remaining fingers, after which he and his demon his will be executed.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
A classic anime series, Neon Genesis Evangelion takes place in a world threatened by unbeatable beings known as Angels. The only way to fight these ginormous threats is through Evangelions, giant mecha robots that are controlled by a shadow organization called NERV.
This story follows Shinji Ikari, the abandoned and traumatised son of NERV’s leader, who is taken in by employee Misato Katsuragi. However, it turns out he was persuaded back because only he can pilot Unit-01, an Evangelion that synchronises with its host.
Despite his unwillingness, Shinji is forced to join the fight against the Angels, opening up wounds from his early childhood and creating new psychological scars along the way.
Tokyo Ghoul is another series with a lead boy whose life is turned upside down.
Ken Kaneki is an ordinary, quiet student until his date turns out to be a ghoul, human-like creatures that feed on human flesh. A freak construction accident saves him from certain death at her hands her, but to be saved, he’s implanted with her organs her, turning him into a human-ghoul hybrid.
Suddenly thrust into the dark, unforgiving world of ghouls while trying to keep his new identity secret, he’s taken under the wing of a ghoul-run coffee shop, where he learns about their marginalized world and the growing conflict between them and the government’s CCG tasked with wiping them out.
