Attack on Titan episode 87, The Dawn of Humanity

When the credits had finished rolling on episode 86 and after the ending sequence concluded, the preview trailer for episode 87 of Attack on Titan was shared.

The preview trailer showed that the next Attack on Titan installment (also referred to as season 4 part 2 episode 12) would be titled “The Dawn of Humanity”.

This title, The Dawn of Humanity, is the title of the next chronological chapter from the manga that the anime is set to adapt; which was chapter 130 in Isayama’s original series.

However, the anime adaptation took it one step further, with the post-credit scene in episode 86 actually being the opening to chapter 130 in the manga.

In fact, MAPPA has done a very good job at pacing the anime adaptation, with almost every single episode from season 4 adapting at least one complete manga chapter:

  • Chapter 117, “Judgement” – episode 76
  • Chapter 118, “Sneak Attack” – episode 77
  • Chapter 119, “Two Brothers” – episode 78
  • Chapter 120-121, “Memories of the Future” – episode 79
  • Chapter 122, “From You, 2000 Years Ago” – episode 80
  • Chapter 123-124, “Thaw” – episode 81
  • Chapter 125, “Sunset” – episode 82
  • Chapter 126, “Pride” – episode 83
  • Chapter 127, “Night of the End” – episode 84
  • Chapter 128, “Traitor” – episode 85
  • Chapter 129, “Retrospective” – episode 86
  • Chapter 130, “The Dawn of Humanity” – episode 87

“I… I don’t want to fight anymore. I don’t want for us to try to kill each other again. Not with any of you… not even with Eren… ” – Annie Leonhart, episode 86 and chapter 130.

How to read the original manga chapter online

Attack on Titan chapter 130, The Dawn of Humanity was released worldwide on July 9th2020.

The chapter is actually the final installment of volume 32 of the manga series, which was titled “The Dawn of Man”, which launched in Japan in September 2020 and outside Japan in English in December the same year.

Attack on Titan Volume 32 can be purchased online through Penguin Random House as well as various outlets including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, BAM, Bookshop, Indiebound, Powell’s, Target and Walmart.

Users can also stream the manga series through the likes of Azuki, Crunchyroll, Comixology Unlimited, Mangamo, Inkypen and Kindle Unlimited.

How many chapters are left to be adapted in the anime?

This means that if episode 87 of Attack on Titan’s anime adaptation only covers chapter 130, after the final ever episode from season 4 there will be nine chapters from the manga that have not yet been adapted.

These nine chapters make up the finale to the Attack on Titan manga and with only one episode to go; that will not be adapted in season 4:

  • Chapter 131: The Rumbling
  • Chapter 132: The Wings of Freedom
  • Chapter 133: Sinners
  • Chapter 134: In the Depths of Despair
  • Chapter 135: The Battle of Heaven and Earth
  • Chapter 136: Dedicate Your Heart
  • Chapter 137: Titans
  • Chapter 138: A Long Dream
  • Chapter 139: Toward the Tree of That Hill

This means that one of three plans will be put in motion; 1) MAPPA makes an original ending next episode, 2) Multiple OVA’s will be produced to adapt the final nine chapters or 3) a feature film will conclude the series.

Fans will have to wait and see what happens after the premiere of the season 4 finale, The Dawn of Humanity, but you can find more information on a potential anime film here.

No new information from AnimeJapan

This weekend, the AnimeJapan 2022 event is taking place, where anime and manga franchises take the opportunity to share their latest announcements.

The Attack on Titan series featured earlier today with various actors from the show taking part in a special panel.

Considering the popular theory that an Attack on Titan movie will follow the fourth season, many fans had expected some type of hint to be shared at the AnimeJapan event.

In a rather surprising turn of events, those involved on the panel actually made no mention of what’s next for the hit franchise; leading to the YouTube Chat being spammed with messages from disappointed fans.

Attack on Titan’s livestream can be found via the Anime Pony Canyon YouTube channel here.
